3 Steps to Mastering Lateral Brush Techniques
In this class I’ll be introducing you to the Stanislavski® Lateral Brush Method. This method enables you to play any groove, fill or rhythm you can think of, with beautiful sound that only brushes can create. By the end of this masterclass, you’ll be able to play ballad, rock, shuffle, swing, funk and bossa nova grooves, along with comping and fill ideas with lateral brush techniques.
The 3 steps are:
- Train Track Patterns: creates ballad, rock and swing grooves
- Two-Direction Singles: fantastic for swing comping, and funk and Bossa Nova grooves
- Singles with Crossover: develops fills and rhythmic vocabulary

Hi, I'm Anthony Stanislavski
I have been a professional drummer and teacher for over 20 years. I currently perform with the Australian Army Band, and freelance in many jazz, country, funk and wedding bands. I also teach in a couple of prestigious private schools, here in Melbourne, Australia.
My method was born out of pure frustration of the lack comprehensive resources for brush education. I spent years searching for any book, dvd, YouTube video or teacher that could help me understand how to use them effectively, only to be left more confused than when I started. I also felt inadequate in teaching brushes to my students.
So I decided I was going to change that.
Over the course of a few years, I committed hundreds of hours to the practice room, developed my craft over many gigs, and created a method that I wish was taught to me. Throughout this process I documented every step and eventually put the ideas into my book Phrasing and Freedom with Brushes which has sold hundreds of copies worldwide and has gained the attention of Carter McLean, Florian Alexandru-Zorn and Hudson Music.
